In 2006 there are 285,000 jobs in pharmacy tech, 71 percent of which are in retail, grocery stores, deparment stores, and mass retailer. Pharmacy Tech duties in Hospitals

In hospitals, pharmacy techs duties include preparing sterile solutions and handling medications to nurses or physicians.Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies and procedures maintain inventory of controlled substances; delivers, stocks and inventories products for automated dispensing devixes and patient care areas; repackages pharmaceutical products; maintain records and files; and issues charges and credits to patient accounts.

Pharmacy Technician duties when working with Pharmacist

Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and assists with the preparation, packing and delivery of products and services to patients. Performs the following tasks in a correct and timely fashion under the supervision of a pharmacist. Assists the pharmacist with the preparation and dispensing of medications and supplies using appropriate techniques and following  policies and procedures. . Technicians receive written prescription requests from patients. They also may receive prescriptions sent electronically from doctors’ offices, and in some states they are permitted to process requests by phone. Technicians also establish and maintain patient profiles, as well as prepare insurance claim forms. Technicians always refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information or health matters to a pharmacist.

Pharmacy Tech duties in Retail

Assists with product purchasing, inventory and equipment management. Maintain confidentiality of patient and proprietary information. Participates in the process for assessing, managing, and reporting medication-related incidents and equipment error and/or failures. Participate in on-call responsibilities of the pharmacy department if required. .  Technicians also establish and maintain patient profiles, as well as prepare insurance claim forms. Technicians always refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information or health matters to a pharmacist.
